1So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:1-3, NRSV
The title for today’s blog is taken from the section in the New Revised Standard Version that starts with Colossians 3:1 and goes through 3:17. It sets the reader up for the next section “Rules for Christian Households.” We are to start our new life with Christ with the intent to follow Christ’s commands.
No matter who we are, “Christ is all and in all” (Colossians 3:11c, NRSV), we are called to the same calling in Jesus Christ. All of us are called to love God with all of our being, love others as we love ourselves, and teach others what Jesus has commanded us. It doesn’t matter where we come from it just matters that we come to him, our Savior and Lord.
How do we do this? Paul is very explicit in his instructions, we are to “seek the things that are above,” not “things that are on earth.” He goes on to talk about how we have died, not a physical death but a spiritual death to sin, so we can be alive in him. This is why we go through the Lent season, to remind us of his death so that we can remember our death.
As we are made alive in Christ, we are made new so that we can be the witnesses that Jesus has called us to be. How wonderful it is to know that we were chosen to be the emissaries for the creator of heaven and earth. We have that great responsibility wherever we are.
Read the rest of this chapter 3, it is an eye opener and great advice section for those who are in Christ. Live as he told us to live, do as he told us to do, and be who he told us to be.
God Bless!
